The Iron Man of India
Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel was born on October 31, 1875, in Nadiad, Gujarat. He came from a humble farmer's family. Despite facing financial difficulties, he pursued education diligently and later studied law in England, becoming a successful barrister.
Inspired by Mahatma Gandhi, Patel joined the Indian freedom struggle. He played a key role in organizing peasants during the Kheda and Bardoli Satyagrahas, earning him the title "Sardar" (Leader). He was a prominent figure in the Indian National Congress and a close associate of Gandhi.
After independence in 1947, Patel became India's first Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister. His greatest achievement was the integration of over 560 princely states into the Indian Union, using diplomacy and strategic foresight. This earned him the title "Iron Man of India".
Sardar Patel passed away on December 15, 1950. He was posthumously awarded the Bharat Ratna in 1991. His birthday, October 31, is celebrated as National Unity Day in India.
"Manpower without unity is not a strength unless it is harmonized and united properly, then it becomes a spiritual power." Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel
